Split trip costs when friends stay different nights
Someone arrives later or leaves earlier. Agree how you will share the stay, then calculate each expense using the people involved. Here are two accommodation methods and a complete example.
Choose the accommodation rule before booking
When someone joins for fewer nights, there are at least two reasonable ways to share the stay: divide the total by person-nights, or split each night among the people there. They answer different questions and can give different totals.
Person-nights gives every occupied night per person the same cost across the whole booking. Night-by-night splitting shares each night’s price between that night’s guests. Agree on the method while everyone can still decide whether the trip suits them.
A fixed rental price does not necessarily fall when someone leaves early. Discuss what happens if someone cancels after the group commits; do not silently move their agreed share onto others.
Worked example: divide by person-nights
Four friends rent a place for €720 across three nights. Alex and Sam stay all three nights, Jo stays the last two, and Remy stays the last one. The amounts are fictional and assume everyone agrees to share comparable sleeping space.
Count the person-nights: 3 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 9. Then divide €720 by 9: €80 per person-night.

The general formula is: total accommodation cost × your nights ÷ total person-nights. Room differences or a separately charged room may call for another agreement.
Compare the night-by-night alternative
If each of the three nights costs €240, the first night is shared by Alex and Sam (€120 each). The second is shared by Alex, Sam and Jo (€80 each). The third is shared by all four (€60 each).

Both methods allocate the full €720. Alex and Sam pay more under the second method because fewer people share their first night. If nightly prices vary, use the actual price of each night. Discuss fixed fees separately and apply the agreed rule consistently.
Split meals and transport by who used them
Use the person-night result from the first example. Add a €120 dinner for Alex, Sam and Jo (€40 each), and a €60 taxi for Jo and Remy (€30 each). Alex paid for the stay, Sam paid for dinner and Jo paid for the taxi.

In this example, Sam pays Alex €160, Jo pays Alex €170 and Remy pays Alex €110. That reimburses Alex’s €440 balance. Check the expenses together before settling.

Common questions
Is splitting by nights always the fairest method?
There is no single rule for every group. Person-nights, nightly occupancy, room differences and fixed booking commitments can all matter. Choose a rule everyone accepts before booking.
Should meals use the same split as accommodation?
Usually the participants are different. Record who took part in each meal or activity and apply the rule agreed for that expense.
What about rounding?
Calculate before rounding, round final shares to the currency’s smallest unit, and assign any remaining cent explicitly so the shares equal the expense total.
